Questions about Amis Wikipedia

mikawit

Hello Sotiale,

My name is Coleton, and I am an MA student researching Amis Wikipedia. I noticed that you were responsible for a lot of the importation of Amis Wikipedia from the Incubator to the current full Wiki site, and that you are currently serving on the Wikipedia Language Committee. If you have time I'd love to learn a little bit more about what you do/have done for Amis Wikipedia and other small Wikipedias/Incubator Wikis. Happy to talk here or exchange contact info, thank you! Hi, Achast. I'm just taking care of my business. Amis Wikipedia showed suitable activity on Wikimedia incubator, several users were sufficiently active, and based on that, amiwiki domain was created separately after linguistic verification. In the process, I have provided my opinion so that approval of this can be made. And I did import work here from the incubator. This is all I have done, and will continue to do. If you need more specific information, please ask and I will answer.
Hi again, thank you so much for the answer. Sorry, I did not have an alert set up so I did not immediately see your reply. I am curious about the approval process. I know that to graduate from the incubator their needs to be sufficient activity and active users, but is there an exact number? Or is this just up to the Language Committee?
Also, what is your role now that Amis has its own domain? What sort of duties do you perform to help maintain the Amis Wikipitiya?
Thank you again for your response and for all the work you put in!
1. There is no binding rule that must grant approval if certain criteria are exceeded. This is because it creates games to get independent domains; Imagine doing the bare minimum to get an independent domain. However, minimum standards are set. For example, there should be at least 3 steady contributors, and that should last several months. After that, langcom will make the final decision after comprehensively considering specific circumstances. In conclusion, therefore, meeting these minimum criteria does not mean that some community will get a domain or that langcom will have to approve it. In addition to this, there are mandatory conditions for approval. Translation of the core messages from translatewiki must be complete and have valid ISO 639 code. Generally for most languages this is not a problem.
2. I imported from incubatorwiki to this wiki, and since the maintenance of the wiki has to be done autonomously, there is no role for me at this point. I can help maintain this wiki as a steward elected by the global community, not in the position of langcom member. In conclusion, at this point in time, I have no obligation or role in this wiki. I can only help if the community members of this wiki ask for help, otherwise I can do minimal maintenance.
Great that's very clear, thank you. And if I may ask, what makes you personally interested in working in langcom and with small languages like Amis specifically? I think the small language Wikipedia world is fascinating, and I am interested to hear what motivates people to volunteer and support it.
Well, there seems to be a few points, one being that most languages that already have a lot of speakers have their own domain. This is a natural consequence, and since only small languages remain in the end, these languages now exist on the incubatorwiki, and naturally become langcom's main business. Second is, the Wikimedia movement is about spreading free knowledge. Many people around the world do not speak English and communicate in their own language. So there should be an appropriate Wikipedia in their language. The reason why domains are not created for all languages is because, in the case of small languages, domains are abandoned when contributors disappear. This creates maintenance difficulties and causes several problems, including concerns about spreading false information.
That makes sense. Thank you for the info, I'll let you know if I have any other questions. Have a good day!
